PBS had a show on about the Grizzly bears yesterday. Basically, all the efforts to safe them and bring them back from the edge of extinction is just a big old waste of time. Why? Well, the bears have three primary food supplies if they stay in the wild (away from people). One is fish. The fish they eat are being outpaced by an introduced fish, and alien species from the great lakes that is displacing the fish they normally eat. Well, maybe they could just adapt to this new fish? I don't know. Second, they stock up on nectar filled moths in the summer. They do this in the high country. But the flowers that moths get the nectar from are in danger of being overrun with trees because of the change in climate. Also the moths are at risk from pesticides, but that's nothing new. These are army worm moths by the way. They destroy lawns as larva if they are the same as the ones around here. Lastly is the pine trees. The bears eat a certain kind of pine nut, and the trees they get them from are now being destroyed by (you guessed it) a disease or insect, or whatever. These nuts are so important in their diet (and many other animals) that it actually influences the number of cubs born the next year. And if that isn't enough, the bears were taken off the endangered species list, so some places are now hunting them.
Actually I can see the last thing, taking them off the list and listing them as 'threatened' rather than endangered, because they have made quite a come back. And there does need to be a balance where people can live and work without being eaten by bears. But humans generally don't seem able to control themselves, or manage things well when given the chance to go out and kill. But it's late and I cant think or type so I'll stop now. Hibernation seems like a good thing.
Ryther is off seeing Batman in Imax glory with the work buddies. And all I got was a lousy t-shirt.

Yesterday I watched Oprah with Rick Springfield, William Shatner and Henry Winkler. Shatner sold his kidney stones and got 75 thou to put towards Habitat for Humanity. Now some family in N'Orleans is living in a new house. Henry Winkler was a Yale grad. You learn something new every day, even if it isn't about bears.
I like Henry Winkler. He was smart and got into production rather than try to stay with acting. His name is behind a lot of things now.
How is old Rick? Wow, GH flashbacks.
Henry Winkler also published several children's books and comes off as a really gentle, thoughtful and intelligent guy in person. Too bad he is very happily married!
Rick is back on GH as Dr. Noah Drake and as a rock star (two characters). Showing his age, but he still has quite a soap opera following. Amazing how much useless info one can get from an hour of TV.
