Well, it was cool enough and dry enough to bake tonight, so I whipped out my Pillsbury (god I hope my mom doesn't read this) pie crusts and put together a fast blueberry pie with the now frozen bb's. Even without the home made crust, or perhaps because of it, the pie was yummy. I think I put in a bit too much sugar, and I should like to get it to congeal more. Had bb volcano coming out the side once it was sliced. Tapioca didn't seem to do much to thicken it. Needs more maybe? Or just less sugar? Well, I have ton's more bb's to work with. I thought I had 5 cups, but I used 3 in the pie and hardly made a dent. Ryther had two slices he liked it so much. He's bb deprived, but I rationalize that bb's have antioxidants, so it's actually good for us. Sure it is.
My mom said she picked just as much today as she did when I was up. And again, hardly made a dent. She did say they are starting to go by though. Oh, the loss of all those berries, makes me want to go up and pick more.
I called on my bird. I had not heard anything about it's final disposition, and they were supposed to notify me. They said he/she might still be there in the facility, which seems strange to me as there is a second nest almost ready to fledge under my eaves. But they also had postal issues where cards were returned, so maybe my notice was one of those.
Mrs. Brokentail has not been seen since I last reported her condition. I suspect she is not with us anymore. I know she's just a squirrel, but she was such a funny girl, and it was so cool to see her carry her babies up the street, on many occasions. Poor old girl.
Coincidentally though, there is a squirrel at the cemetery that we have named patch. When he first appeared about a month ago, he had a patch of fur missing on his back. Something obviously got at him. Well, today we saw him, or at least I think it was him, and he has a missing or very injured eye. He was looking really beat, but still active. Not sure what got at him, but he got away. So I of course put out some more food for him (we have bread crusts and seed for the sparrows such). He was having a bit of trouble getting the food before the crows did, but I think he had a good share. My new pet.
Ryther got me a crank radio a year or so ago. It's great to have during storms as we always unplug the TV and such (had a TV knocked out and destroyed by lightning, mother has had it happen a few times up in NH, so laugh if you want, but my electronics are worth it to me). Well, it also gets a few TV channels, and so I have been listening to the news on the radio at 6 while I cook or work outside. I don't really need the pictures, I just want the local news. Well, it dawned on me that with the digital TV crap, I will no longer be able to get my TV on the radio! I'm pissed. What a freaking pain.
NPR Said this morning that the oil companies that so desperately want to open up new drilling areas are not even using or exploring the places they already have leases for. So what' is that, just another land grab while we are in this 'oil crisis'? That's what it sounds like to me. Screw them.
Briefly on the news was something about Salvia being used to get high. Now I have to look up Salvia. I did a quick look and came to sage, but that cant be what they are talking about. More on this later.
My rain barrels are disconnected now. They are full and I don't think they drain fast enough to keep up with what is coming off the roof, and I don't want water backing up in the gutter. Might have to change the overflow in the fall. I got a new barrel to make one for my father in law if he wants it. But I am going to wait on it for now. Seems like I don't have time to do what I want.
We watched Persepolis, which is an animated movie about a girl growing up in Iran before and after the revolution. It was very good. It's based on a comic, and it's won awards. It's funny and sad. And enlightening.
Also wanted to comment on the fact that the 2010 census won't be counting gay marriages. How freaking stupid is that? If in the state they are taking the information in, the people are married, they should be able to write Md on the form. Otherwise it's an incomplete and inaccurate census. Maybe the Feds are worried that it will show gay families are real! OH MY GOD! NOT THAT!

Oh, and there is silk on my corn. Which means little ears of corn are starting to form in the stalks Ooooohhh. And I picked a second bunch of beans from the pole beans today. And had a third (well, gave it to the kid) cherry tomato. My summer squash is a disaster though. They form nice fruit, but then they start to rot on the end! Very frustrating. We did eat a small but yummy zucchini from hubs. coworker's wife's garden. Fried with caramelized onions. Oh so good.

I really liked Persepolis, too. I saw it in the theater a while back. Wonderful.
Congrats on yer beans and corn.
I will have a moment of silence now for Mrs. Brokentail. Sorry to hear about the poor ol' girl.
And yes, we are all sad that she has gone to that great oak in the sky. Or maybe it's a pine. Pining for the fyords.
